Native Nursery Specialist

Whananaki Cld and Whakapaumahara Marae are calling for expressions of interest from Horticulturists with proven experience in native nursery management. The role will involve setting up a native nursery and managing a small team of 2 local workers and volunteers.

Role Description

Title: Native Nursery Specialist

Reports to: Whananaki CLD Coordination Team

Delegations: As per approved Nursery Budget 


Key responsibilities:

  • Development and setup of a small scale native nursery
  •                 Management and supervision of the Nursery
  • Liaise with key stakeholders including suppliers
  • Manage communications in a professional manner 
  • Dispatch inventory control (incoming and outgoing)
  • Coordinate the nursery development 
  •                 Complete administration duties as required
  •                 Provide training to nursery staff and volunteers
  •                 Responsible for health and safety compliance


To be successful in this role, you will need the following skills /attributes with relevant experience to reflect:

  • Previous experience in nursery husbandry is preferred
  •                 Proven experience in the management of a nursery
  •                 Excellent budding, grafting, seed propagation and other nursery skills
  • A relevant horticultural qualification would be advantageous
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  •        Customer service experience
  •                Cultural responsiveness
  •                Awareness of community led development principles
  •                 Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills.
  • Leadership experience
  • Computer literate
  • Be physically fit, hardworking and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
