WĀHI TAPU

  • What has happened?

All five wāhi tapu in Whananaki (North & South) are established on Māori Reserves.

Jackie Cooper (LG) has explored securing land for a local general cemetery however the council owned areas are not suitable and so the remaining option is dependent on local landowners donating land for this purpose. A cenotaph is no longer a priority but nevertheless it remains as a consideration for the future.

Storage container purchased from Barfoote Contracting and delivered onsite. Timber was purchased to add interior in the container designed and fitted in kind.

Items prioritised to assist grave-diggers have been purchased through Mitre 10 and Bunnings Warehouse. The equipment has enhanced the capability of grave-diggers to support the tangi that are ongoing.

Working bee completed at Te Rākau Tahi.

Policy for use of equipment has been approved with Marae trustees and key stakeholders.

Wānanga at Whakapaumahara Marae included the kaupapa of the wāhi tapu.
