There is a movement towards embracing Mātauranga Māori and understanding Te Tiriti o Waitangi. CLD can embellish this movement in Aotearoa New Zealand. How, and what examples can we look at to deepen understanding?

Exciting seismic shifts are happening in New Zealand’s cultural political landscape. The regular use of Te Reo, recognition of Te Ao Māori, and a growing understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi demonstrate a movement with the potential to radically re-orientate Aotearoa New Zealand to be a better place for all.

(CLD) is one strand that can support this movement achieve effective and lasting change. By fostering connections between diverse groups, we can help shape the aspirations of local communities, grow local leadership and support new relationships that are inclusive and restorative.

Tineka is no stranger to community initiatives in Whananaki as she was previously on the CLD leadership group as a youth trustee. Tineka is excited to be taking on this new part time role to support community led development. The recent bombing activity off the footbridge organised by Tineka was well received by the many enthusiasts who joined in.

A funding application for the new build has been submitted to DIA and a further application is being developed for Lotteries Community Facilities. With contestable funding it is very difficult however this plan has been in progress for five years and every effort is being made to achieve this community goal. Since the writing of this newsletter...He Aitua! It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Jamie Hancox - our colleague, mentor and friend. Jamie was the leading project manager and mentor of the whananaki taiao group, his leadership, knowledge and passion for whananaki goes back to implementation of the original maara kai for the marae, to more recently with the planning, planting and development of the Native Nursery project patnership with CLD, DOC (Jobs for nature) and Whakapaumahara marae. Jamie was a dear friend to us all, and will be remembered for his huge heart, love of taiao and maara kai. Jamie will be sorely missed, we offer our deepest condolonces to Jamies partner Tania and his whānau at this difficult time.

If you read the end of year edition of the Bridge newsletter you will no doubt have seen all the achievements of various community members. Thank you to Jackie Cooper and the team for putting that iconic newsletter together.

In the CLD Community led development space we are pleased to report that this year we reached several key milestones.

We transitioned into a Charitable Trust – Te Whana o Nanakia Trust

We submitted the community HUB plans for building consent to Council. Well done Tama Moore and the team. Next step is to work on the funds to build the HUB!

We employed four locals - Kim, Charles, Titan and Jason to develop a local native nursery from scratch with help from experts Dennis Scott (award winning landscaper), Jamie Hancock (trainer /coach) and Tania Tipene (horticulture specialist). Its early days but we will be building our small setup over the summer break, thanks to Pera Waetford. We are watering 10,000 natives ready to plant later in the new year. We have some manuka plants to share so come check us out after the holiday break. If you are interested in food sovereignty we will be getting a maara kai underway behind the marae. We will also be sharing our learnings on indigenous biodiversity.

4-We have just completed our first contemporary Pou. Nga mihi Anthony Walters and the team for your amazing talents. We look forward to unveiling the pou early in the new year and sharing the korero. Hopefully this is the first of a series of contemporary pou sharing our stories and places of significance.

           5. We have made a start on developing ‘story telling skills’. In the new year we plan to have a film evening – featuring several of the locals. This will definitely be a fun evening out. Volunteer to have your story told!

           6. We started Social Enterprise classes with the youth and tested a couple of products, now its time to look at marketing, so watch this space over the summer break for some workshops.

           7. We completed our evaluation with help from Denise Bijoux. Lots of learnings and always room for improvement! A copy will be posted up on the website.

           8. We invited Tineka Waetford on board as the newest member of the CLD Coordination team. Tineka brings a youth perspective to the mix and is keen to develop her videography skills, so don’t be surprised if she asks you for a minute of your time to share a ‘moment in time about Whananaki.’

There are also many other wonderful initiatives happening in the community.

A big ups to those who are working on the wharf restoration. This is a very important initiative for our community.

The Whakapaumahara marae development is also progressing. We look forward to the opening mid 2022.

We would also like to acknowledge our local school, the wonderful teachers, the PTA and the students. The community was treated to an awesome evening of entertainment with a fantastic kapa performance. We can all be proud of their efforts.

Finally an acknowledgement to our partners in the CLD journey – the DIA who have modelled the principles of partnership. A big ups to Darren Collins for showing us the ‘super power’ of consistency.

Tēnā koutou katoa, Ko koe ki tēnā, ko ahau ki tēnei kīwai o te kete. On behalf of Hato Hone St John Ambulance, we hope you and your whānau are keeping well during this alert level and acknowledge the mahi you are doing to support your whānau. We also wish to advise you of the measures we have put in place to ensure that we keep everyone safe while working under Alert Level 3 & 4. You might notice some differences when you call an ambulance which are in place to keep whānau and our kaimahi safe.

           > Our kaimahi are wearing masks and gloves when attending all patients. > Sometimes we may be wearing additional items such as a gown and safety glasses. > If possible, please wear a mask/face covering before our arrival. > When we first arrive, we will be keeping our distance just until we understand a bit more. We are starting our kōrero with you using some important pātai to understand if anyone in the whare has symptoms of COVID-19 or has had any contact with places or people relating to COVID.

            > Please be advised that whānau may not be able to travel in the ambulance, depending on the patient’s condition. This is necessary to protect the safety of whānau and the wider hapori. They are able, however, to take a mobile phone with them so please help them with this to ensure you can maintain contact. During transport we will ask you to wear a mask as well. > We will encourage you to use our QR code in the ambulance. These precautions are in place for any member of the public that calls for an ambulance to ensure the haumaru and wellbeing of our whānau, kaimahi and wider hapori. Although there may be a delay, our ambulance crews will still respond to you and your help ensures they can take the appropriate steps to keep everyone safe on arrival. Latest Update - 5th May, 2021

           General Update –

Following the previous concept presentation, the design team made changes to the floor plan based on feedback received. Areas such as the kitchen for example were increased to allow for a layout that would suit a range of activities from catering to production of preserves, candles etc. We then had a quantity surveyed building estimate prepared which evaluated the design to be in the region of $1.7-1.8M.

We then contacted Darren Collins at DIA to share the design and our current cost estimates. Based on previous discussions we had been led to understand that funding from DIA could be achievable if the total build cost was closer to the region of $1.1-1.3M. The design team then set about making revisions to the design which would ultimately lower the cost without compromising the design areas and hence the functionality of the design. Through this process we managed to come up with some clever solutions that we felt actually benefitted the original design. This included multi purposing some physical rooms and rationalising deck and walkways areas as well as significantly revising the roof structure.

Whilst this design review took place DIA continued to review the funding options and were later able to confirm that a slightly higher build cost, between $1.5-1.7M, might be achievable. We naturally considered going back to the original approved design, however we had made some really positive changes that we felt would be beneficial to the long-term design and revised the plans to the current plan presented today. We believe that this revised design will comfortably meet the DIA funding available and also provide a successful and functional and aesthetic community building.

           Summary Plan Changes –

Gallery space has been slightly reduced and an internal storage room has been included

Deck areas to the perimeter of the building have been significantly reduced but still provide areas to view the gardens and give ease of access to the entire building

The admin building had been revised to 2 meeting rooms which open into each other via an operable wall. This provides maximum flexibility for use.

The kitchen has been doubled in size and serves both into the main meeting rooms as well as the main kiosk servery. It provides central circulation around a mobile bench which is ideal for making preserves and large catering etc.

The kiosk is accessed off the main kitchen but also has a display wall for signage and product display to separate the two areas. The kiosk allows for a commercial coffee machine as well as drink and ice cream fridges.

The office area is separate to but adjacent to the kiosk and doubles as an information counter with openable window. This allows for a single staff user to service the kiosk and man the office area if required.

The toilets are now directly accessible off the main arrival ramp.

It’s taken a long time to reach this milestone and mahi already achieved by the community group shows the need for a community facility to support the many initiatives that are being undertaken.

We're very excited to share the news that Whakapaumahara Marae has been successful in their application to the Provincial Growth Unit for a grant towards landscaping at the Marae and adjacent to the marae. It was confirmed at an announcement ceremony by MP Shane Jones at Okorihi Marae in Kaikohe that whakapaumahara will receive a grant of up to $340,000 for their Shovel Ready project! A huge thank you to the Whakapaumahara Marae Trust Board members for all their efforts and support to secure this funding towards the Redevelopment Masterplan.

The funding will be put towards fencing and entryways, reinstatement and redirection of waterways (to reduce the impact of flooding), levelling of land, tree felling, weed eradication and most importantly new native planting!!

As part of the agreement with the Provincial Development Fund the funding will be focussed on providing local employment.

With the Marae Stage 2 Redevelopment Plan works also inching closer, we are looking forward to a really productive time for the Marae in the coming months and into the new year ahead. Lots to look forward to and lots of reasons to come and be involved in what's happening.

A clear Master plan for the Pathways, planting, and nursery garden is required as a starting point for the priority areas of development surrounding the Hub. A small scale nursery will be set up with a composting station with a clear accessway. In addition a strong 15 person team of volunteers is to be trained up in kaitiakitanga and permadynamics. This is also in readiness for social enterprise.
